About Nomadic Habitat
Nomadic Habitat is an independent site about living smaller and traveling farther: van life, camping off-grid, tiny homes and the gear that makes them work. We write for people who are planning their first trip or build as much as for those already on the road.
What we cover
- Van life: choosing and building a van, where to sleep, and what it really costs. Start with our beginner tips and our boondocking guide.
- Power and gear: portable power stations, solar panels, water filters and the other equipment that keeps you off-grid longer, such as our EcoFlow vs Jackery comparison.
- Places to stay: free camping on public land and memberships like Harvest Hosts.
- Tiny homes and other mobile living: tiny houses, skoolies, shipping containers and more.
How we research our guides
We hold every page on this site to a few rules:
- We check facts against primary sources. Rules for public land come from the agencies that manage it. Product specs come from the manufacturer, and we compare them with retailer listings. Prices are dated so you know when we checked them.
- When sources disagree, we say so or leave the number out. We would rather give you a range, or nothing, than a confident figure that might be wrong.
- We’re clear about what we have and haven’t tested. Many of our product guides compare published specs and owner reports rather than our own hands-on testing, and those pages say so.
- We don’t make up stories. You won’t find invented testimonials or “real-life examples” here.
- We keep pages current. Each article shows when it was published and when it was last updated, and we revise guides when products, prices or rules change.
Spot something wrong or out of date? Please tell us. We fix errors and update the page.
How we make money
Nomadic Habitat is free to read. We earn money through affiliate links: when you buy something through a link on this site, the retailer may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. We’re a member of the Amazon Associates program, and we work with brands through affiliate networks including Awin and Impact, such as BLUETTI, Renogy and Harvest Hosts.
Commissions never decide what we recommend. We include products from brands we have no affiliate relationship with when they’re the better pick, and every page with affiliate links says so at the top. Read more in our privacy policy and terms and conditions.
